Hello, IDEA!

From the recent Java IDE discussions, it seems like there's a good portion of Java programmers who don't know IntelliJ IDEA, or simply haven't tried it yet. In this short screencast, I cover all the basics you'll need to get started using IDEA in about 10 minutes. Watch "Hello, IDEA!" No fancy tricks like my last screencast, this demo is simple and easy.

Do you have a friend or colleague who hasn't tried IDEA? Send them a link. I'll be posting more advanced feature-specific screencasts soon. Stay tuned.

Nice little demo, but it's missing quite possibly the nicest feature of Idea, Live Templates!

Why did you type out public static viod main(etc..) when you can just type psvm[tab]? Why not show people the power of itar[tab] to create all the code to iterate over args[]?

Live templates are truly amazing. Try soutm[tab] to create a System.out.println with the class and method name. Or how about soutv which starts a System.out.println and pops up a list of all the variables that are in scope?

There is so much power you're not showing people.

Opps, my bad, you did that in your last post. Sorry, I just get frustrated when I see people wasting time by typing out what live templates can do automagically.

William,

Yes, you're right that I left out a lot of powerful features. I actually started out making a screencast to show such features, but I felt it might intimidate people who haven't tried IDEA before. So it appears there are two audiences. If I tried to make a single screencast to cover both audiences, it would have been too long, so I decided to make two screencasts. This is just the first one.

IDEA is not simply a power tool, it is also incredibly easy to use and intuitive. This screencast was intended to show its ease of use. E.g. if you want to type out 'public static void main', IDEA doesn't get in your way, and doesn't force you to do it any particular way. The next screencast will show the productivity features, including, of course, live templates.

If IDEA were to come by default with
- a junit global library (using IDEA's own junit.jar),
- a TestCase class template, and
- an empty testXX() method L.T.,
(the first 3 things I add, after a clean IDEA install)
, you could show a lot in another 15 seconds !
